It took me about halfway through Sean Lennon (maybe the most important outcome of John and Yoko’scollaboration) and (the drummer in Deerhoof) Greg Saunier’s new project to recognize that it’s incredible. In the first minute the first track, “Impossible Shapes” juxtaposes jazz, a hint of black-metal (but without the shred and growl), and a Pink Floyd-esque guitar solo. The album continues to incorporate Saunier’s penchant(!!!) for improvisation with Lennon’s electronic craftsmanship and sound collage across a spectrum of styles. The first five tracks seem to belong together and can seem to drag on, but “Goddess Curlers” (track 6) is a Lightning Bolt type guitar-and-drum rager. The album is extremely improvisational and sounds a bit like a well-planned jam-session with a nod to the Flaming Lips’ Embryonic. This doesn’t lend itself to radio play and the smooth transitions between songs make it hard to recommend isolated tracks but the samples offered up by whatever song is chosen will hopefully pique the listener’s interest and convince them to listen deeper to this record.
