Dirty Glow

When I put on this CD, the first song made me picture myself in
Napoleon Dynamite. Just as I tried to throw a football over them
mountains, however, they started to pulsate, turn different colors,
and melt like psychedelic sorbet. Basically, this album made me feel
as if I was Uncle Rico on an acid trip. Dirty Glow is the first LP of Nate
Brenner, bass player for Tune-Yards; I’ve only listened to their singles,
but from this record I can tell that he might have had a good influence
in the production of their weirder cuts. For his debut, Brenner pulls
influence from rock, hip-hop, jazz and electro; you’ll find sizzling
guitars, blown out live drums, soaring organs, booming subwoofers,
trance synths, horn sections, and erratic saxophone breaks, often
within the same song. There’s plenty to take in and enjoy from this
record, but there aren’t any particular songs that grab me on a
personal level. Still, if you’re looking for something weird and (very)
fun to play, I think this album is pretty accessible for what it is. Just
don’t forget to put in the crystals.
