I am writing today to proclaim my new found love for the hip/hop producer and maker of music, L'Orange. L'Orange plays an elegant style of sampling hip/hop that is hard to find. The samples are nostalgic and the beats are smooth. It's the type of music that might take you back to a place you've never been. The samples are often old-timey and provide a beautiful contrast between the vocals and instrumentals. A friend said this is what Bioshock rap might be. I might agree? It's tough to describe the music so I'll let L'Orange speak for himself. Here’s what he said about his album “Old Soul:”
“Billie Holiday is my muse. Her creative vision and stylistic integrity have influenced both my music and my writing. When I decided to work on this project, I wanted to approach it with respect for her music. I wanted these remixes to be both inspired by and dedicated to the life and craft of one of the most innovative and soulful singers of all time. Each track is designed to represent a significant part of Billie Holiday’s life.
Thank you for listening,
And here’s what he said in reference to his newest album, “Still Spinning:”
“No one has shaped my view of music more than James Yancey. He challenged our idea of music and pushed us towards a more progressive and creative appreciation of hip hop. He died six years ago, but the music lives on in his wake. This project is dedicated to the life and memory of the one and only J Dilla.”
There’s plenty more and you can check out all his music (which he offers for free) at: http://lorangeproductions.com
