The first time I ever heard Kevin Morby was at the Mohawk when he opened up for Cate Le Bon and it was rad. The record manages to stay much more tame compared to the way the songs translated to the stage, but after a few listens Morby’s controlled subtlety really caught my attention; with the exception of a few I knew I would like live or recorded like Tracks 2 & 3. This is his first solo endeavor after being part of Woods and The Babies and if you enjoy those bands then there’s something here for you as well. This album definitely stands on its own even with his past successes. Morby croons, “I don’t know just where I am going ‘cause I’ve never been” and that aimlessness is all right with me because it finds an awesome sound.
