Tuition Increases
by admin ~ November 30th, 2007. Filed under: Episodes.Today we’re talking about tuition hikes at U-T Austin. With us in the studio we have Zack Hall. He is a student at U.T. Austin who organized a rally to protest the increases in tuition.
What’s going on:
The Tuition Policy Advisory Council told U-T President William Powers to increase tuition by about three-hundred dollars a year starting next fall. The Council says an increase in the cost of attendance at U-T is needed to keep U-T Austin competitive with schools across the nation because Inflation and a lack of money from the state forced them to. The council held open comment sessions this week so they could think about their constituent’s opinions when they write their final recommendation to the U-T System Board of Regents in December. The council is made up of four students, including Undergraduate Student Government President Andrew Solomon and Graduate Student Assembly President Brian Gaten. Some students say they are being forced to go into debt to make up the rising tuition rates, because their families make too much money to qualify for the U-T grant program. Others say this will help U-T hire more teachers and build new classrooms. The final vote happens in February.
