Labeling

by gigo7888 ~ April 15th, 2008. Filed under: Uncategorized.

On Wednesday’s In the Know, we’ll be talking about labels–words we use to describe someone or even ourselves based on things such as race, gender, class, and/or sexual orientation.

Are labels a way of perpetuating stereotypes already created by a white-dominated society? Who even created these labels in the first place? Are we at fault?

Also, do you think labels are a way for society to create a social hierarchy? Where do you think you are in that hierarchy? Do you even have a label attached to you?

Plus, what labels do you think have recently been reclaimed? Has Jeff Foxworthy really made it okay for Southern whites to be called rednecks?

We’ll be talking about this and a whole lot more this Wednesday, April 16th. Just be sure to tune in to In the Know on 91.7 KVRX at 7 PM or by going to our website and clicking the “Listen Now” feature. Feel free to blog with us or call in at 512-495-KVRX.

Hasta maƱana!

Labels like “redneck” have made their way into popular culture in such a way that people think it’s okay to use the word despite negative connotations. I know the word “bitch” has been marketed in bumper stickers and t-shirts so that some women wear the word proudly even though I wouldn’t think of using that word in a joking nature in a public situation.

Remember when girls embraced the word “bitch” and it turned into a marketing craze with bumper stickers and t-shirts? Could you guys discuss whether that was a positive for desensitizing people to the word or was it harmful for perpetuating the use of hurtful names?
