Drinko de Mayo
by gigo7888 ~ April 29th, 2008. Filed under: Uncategorized. This week’s In the Know promises to be a festive one señores! We’re going to be talking about Cinco de Mayo, or what we at ITK like to call Drinko de Mayo.
Every year, it seems like more and more people use Cinco de Mayo as an excuse to get drunk and have fun. But do they know the true meaning behind the 5th of May? I’ll give you a hint–it’s not National Wear a Sombrero Day.
We’ll also be talking about cultural appreciation and/or appropriation. Do people throw themselves into a culture that they know absolutely nothing about just so they can look cool?
(i.e. getting a Chinese tattoo because you think it’ll look sweet)
All this and more on Wednesday’s show. Let us know what you think. Feel free to blog with us or call in at 512-495-KVRX. Be sure to tune in to In the Know on 91.7 KVRX at 7 PM or by going to our website and clicking the “Listen Now” feature.
Hasta Mañana!

It was a giant marketing ploy in the ’60’s by Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Commissioner Riordan that turned a not very celebrated victory of Mexican forces over French invaders May 5, 1862 into an exploitation of Mexican culture. A “Drink a Coors for La Raza” day. The guy owned Coors distributors.

I put Drinco de Mayo just so that it resembles Cinco…but yeh…the “k” would make more sense
