Modest Mouse, 19 Mar 2000

Broadcast nearly 3 months before the official release of Moon and Antarctica, this session was my first exposure to the material on that album. Surprisingly (or not), I still prefer the un-polished quality of these recordings.

Modest Mouse is infinitely better than all the other mindless, shitty music out these days. And frankly, the sound of rock and roll "with balls" is tired and overplayed. Enough with the distorted guitars, boring solos, screaming, crappy lyrics, and 4/4 time signatures. Modest Mouse (and Radiohead) are the only bands who have done anything interesting over the past decade.

i have a question and maybe someone might be able to help me out. i have seen modest mouse twice this year..once at bonnaroo and the other in chicago this past tuesday. there is a guy whose name i am trying to figure out and wondered if anyone knew who he was...he was the guy that played all the strings like the string bass and the horns and a multitude of other instruments, he sang as well. if anyone could answer this question for me...it would be awesome. thanks

If ever there was a band that cannot be over listened... it'd be Modest Mouse. I agree with you all that it's annoying when you go to see them live and there's people in the audience that have only heard "float on" or whatever. But on the other side, cheers that Modest Mouse is getting the attention that they have long deserved, at least people are hearing what they've been missing. Modest Mouse... enough said.

Modest Mouse really has changed my musical taste. I was getting caught up in the enourmous, engulfing monster that is mainstream music when I heard Modest Mouse at a friend's house about a year ago. (Dramamine) They completely changed my musical preference. While I still am sometimes sucked into liking some terrible, popular bands, for the most part I'm a complete modest mouse convert. Since I started listening to them, I honestly can't find any bands that I like more. And, on another note, don't be so harsh on those who discovered Modest mouse through the somewhat "mainstream" song Float on, or their newest album GNFPWLBN. Modest mouse means something different to everyone, don't scorn others for finding it through a mainstream album. And, if they solely like MM because some of their songs are popular at the moment, just wait. Whatever MM fads are happening right now will pass, and they'll latch on to some other band.
Frank :: Oregon :: :: 11 Nov 2005 @ 23:43:05
Modest mouse is amazing. They are simply amazing. The only problem is GOOD NEWS, not becuase it was main stream and all, but because it was halfassed. It starts off amazing, with World at large, Float On, and Ocean Breathes Salty. But tracks like black cadillac and Bury me with it, any track that he blatently screams (not the usual scream either) sound like either they were forced to put out songs with too little time, or it wasnt written by them. Float On is an amazing song. Any one of their other cds is fucking genius. Even Everything and his nasty parlour tricks, which is only 8 songs long. Some people though do not understand them. For instance, without hearing Moon and Antarctica all the way through most people give up and just say this is weird. Modest Mouse is better than anything, ever. Try ugly casanova too, because thats second best.

As like most people, I agree that Modest Mouse "rocks!". However I do not agree in labeling myself a bandwagon joiner because I was introduced to this band throuhg Building Nothing Out of Something in 2003. It seems that most of the people who are going with the trend mainly like Float On and Ocean Breathes Salty, not that thye are bad songs, but that it seems like those are just most catchy and dont truely reflect the art Modest Mouse has brought forth. Some of my favorites would have to be Dramamine, Custom Concern and other very long drawn out songs that have more potential to change the way you think about various themes (life, death, god, everyday life). Other bands that I enjoy, although not my favorite are the Eels, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Dandy Warhols, and ESPECIALLY REQUIEM FOR A DREAM SOUNDTRACK; however Modest Mouse is my favorite. Modest Mouse is clearly not like other bands and is often not accepted or liked because of its pure creativity and crude originality. I agree that most of the people who get exposed to Modest Mouse off of MTV or radio may not be as strong as fans because if they are originally listening to MTV and radio, they are not looking for this type of band. It is like being able to love (and I know some fools who are like this) Modest Mouse equally to Eminem. I just felt it was right to express my opinion of Modest Mouse and their fans. Modest Mouse is indeed excellent and bring almost a new relaxed, confusing music that is purely not meant for the radio or mtv but for the mind of individuals, if even that. Please feel free to respond, argue, comment, or chat to me about anything.

Neutral Milk Hotel is great (some songs feature a saw. as an instrument.) and yes. I think it is funny, the people who say "stop listening to our modest mouse and get back to your shitty pop". Good on the masses if they enjoy good music, I say. Whats so offensive about that? It doesn't change the music for you? It's so snooty. Do you judge music and bands by the type of people that listen to it or something? This petty "I KNEW THEM FIIIRST!!". Good for you. Sorry we can't all do that. People who are all "hate the bandwagon jumpers" are just as bad, to care at all. Who gives a fuck, live your own life without constantly looking to what the masses are doing if you're so individual. I find it all very interesting.

No matter how one feels, no matter what one wants, no matter what one has been through, no matter what one has been listening to, there is a Modest Mouse song somewhere in the secluded world of Indie that one would want to hear. Modest Mouse's music has created an entirely new, expansive world with its variety and originality, making every track (even "Call to Dial a Song" and the Dial-a-Songs!) something special. For the true fan, it would be impossible to become bored of them; there is always bound to be at least one Modest Mouse song that a fan (a.k.a. one with good musical taste) could enjoy. My stupid friend has frequently criticized Modest Mouse, refusing to believe that he has not heard enough of their music to rightfully judge. I had him listen to "The World at Large", "Gravity Rides Everything", and some tracks off of "Sad Sappy Sucker", and his response was "How many songs do I have to listen to to hate them?" (perhaps paraphrased) Well, I am sure that most of you will agree that that is bullshit. My answer is "As few as you have heard, for if you had heard enough, you wouldn't hate them." Of course, Modest Mouse was apparently not meant for Green Day fans like him, who can tolerate Rihanna's "Pon de Replay" because of its beat (no offense to fans of Green Day or Rihanna! Just offense to him!) Screw haters though, we fans have something special that the corrupted minds do not. That is not an insult to fans of Blink-182, Social Distortion, Green day, Matchbox Twenty, Coldplay, The Killers, Nine Inch Nails, or the Postal Service (all of which I love!) As long as one can listen through "The Moon and Antarctica" and say "this stuff is good" (or perhaps something a little more profound), I respect that person and you should too! I just hope that the next album recedes a bit to match the greatness of "The Moon and Antarctica" and "This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About". Longlive Modest Mouse!
