Blues at Sunrise airs every Wednesday morning from 7-9 a.m.
As one of KVRX's most popular and longest-running specialty programs, Blues at Sunrise is proud to be your most complete source for blues music on the FM dial in Austin. Every week DJ Smokehouse Brown offers his listeners a deep, soulful, kick-ass two hour set of the blues, and spins a variety of music, from Delta and Chicago blues to Texas and West Coast artists, plus a healthy dose of Zydeco and old-timey. Weekly ticket giveaways, interviews, and special live performances from local blues artists make each week a unique experience. A long list of talented artists and industry veterans have appeared on the show. Guitar Shorty, Phillip Walker, Sue Foley & Peter Karp, Coco Montoya, Johnny Moeller, Hosea Hargrove, Tinsley Ellis, Marcia Ball, Seth Walker, Cleveland Fats, Sarah Brown, Dan Aykroyd, Cashman, LZ Love & Lightning Red, Black Joe Lewis & The Honey Bears, Le Biscuit Rollers, Eddie Stout (Dialtone Records), Noel Waggener (Heavy Light Records), DJ Daddy-O, CW Ayon, John Németh, JJ Grey, and CR Humphrey, among others, have all made memorable appearances on the program since 2005.
Blues at Sunrise is hosted by Roger Gatchet, AKA DJ Smokehouse Brown. Gatchet is a Ph.D. student in Communication Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, and is a regular contributing writer for Living Blues magazine. He has also contributed articles on the Texas blues scene to Austin Sound (www.austinsound.net) and The Daily Texan. Gatchet started in college radio as a volunteer disc jockey at KGUR, Cuesta Community College's humble 10-watt station in San Luis Obispo, CA. He then moved on to KCPR, Cal Poly's popular student radio station (and the alma mater of Weird Al Yankovic), where he hosted the popular blues program Burnt Dog Blues Lounge. He moved to Austin in the Summer of 2005.
As an oral historian for the Project in Interpreting the Texas Past, Gatchet has conducted oral history interviews with notable East Austin blues players like Henry "Bluesboy" Hubbard, Donald "Duck" Jennings, James Kuykendall, and Hosea Hargrove, among others. He also plays blues harmonica, and has had the privilege of sharing the stage with veteran harmonica artists like James Cotton, Rod Piazza, Mark Hummel, and Paul DeLay. He appears on the Guy Budd Band CD "Woke Up Dreaming." Gatchet enjoys playing with his old bandmates Guy Budd and Gary Mendoza when he returns to his home state of California (www.guybudd.com, www.garymendozaband.com).
