Can't catch a break. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, one of the best bands of the '90s, breaks up after releasing three increasingly bland pseudo-folk albums. Then Mr. Childs risks it all and goes solo, whereupon he releases a half-finished album called Chops that no one buys. Then he follows up his failure with two album releases in one year: the Welsh-language Bore Da, one of 2007's best releases; and The Miracle Inn, an album that could've used another year of work.
So Autumn 2007 arrives, and Euros somehow makes it to America and headlines his own tour. One problem: who the hell is Euros Childs and why, of all countries, would America care?
My understanding is that his tour has been a complete failure. Concert attendance was pathetic and he was sincerely disappointed in the turn-out. I would've gone, but he didn't make it past the East coast.
He should've known better. I mean, how many of you can pronounce Euros Childs or Gorky's Zygotic Mynci? I know I can't.
Acquaint yourself with his music (the Welsh stuff is the best):

Dude, I've only heard
Dude, I've only heard Gorky's first record, and a long time ago at that. I guess I wasn't too crazy about it. Which record is the best? Is his solo stuff worth listening to?
Well, I'm personally a huge
Well, I'm personally a huge fan of the compilation 20 Singles and EP's, which compiles fairly obscure material released between '94 and '96. If those songs do anything for you, then you're a candidate for their earlier albums, like Tatay and Bwyd Time.
I've actually never heard their first album. I think it's called Patio. Is that the one you listened to? I've never been able to track it down.
The solo stuff hit or miss. Bore Da is my favorite, but I also have the strangest affinity for Welsh-language music. Check that one out before you listen to the others. Chops is the second best, but it feels like a demos and rarities album more than it does a complete LP.
Thanks I totally will.
Thanks I totally will. Actually I guess it probably wasn't their first, whatever came out around 1997 is what I've heard. The guy has fabulous hair. I just want to caress it.
That was probably Barafundle
That was probably Barafundle or How I Long to Feel the Summer in My Heart. Barafundle is a great pop album, but it also marks Gorky's transformation into a kinda boring folk band. They were a really fucked-up sounding little band when they started (they were like 14 ), so the change kind of sucks.
Euros's voice is so good, though, that I'll admit to liking the disappointing stuff too.
I'm the same way about David
I'm the same way about David Bowie. I can even jam out to "Too Dizzy", unquestionably the worst Bowie song ever, but I guess that isn't as cool as jamming out to Euro Childs.
I'm a total fanboy for quite
I'm a total fanboy for quite a few artists, so I know the feeling. Sometimes I'm not sure I know how to distinguish between the good and bad material.
The Fall broke me with Reformation TLC, though. It was just too boring.
Dude, I would say I feel for
I remember when Suicide played Emo's many people were equally disappointed, but really, I think it would have been twice as lame for Alan Vega to get up there like it's '77 and put on his dog and pony show. I was kinda happy that it was industrial-style and weird.
Yeah... I first saw The Fall
Yeah... I first saw The Fall four years ago. Blonde Redhead was the support.
Mark E. Smith came out on crutches, which was a dark portent. What a horrible set. I was like 16/17 and knew nothing about the band aside from "Hey Student." For a while, I thought they were the worst band ever. That is, until I finally heard This Nation's Saving Grace and started listening to it obsessively.
Right now, Super Furry Animals (my favorite band) are testing me. Their 2005 album, Love Kraft, even I can't really get into it, yet I probably listened to that damn album 100 times the summer it came out. Their new one is better, but I'm not fully convinced it's actually a good record. I listen to them so much out of habit now that I have no idea what to think.
I just realized I have no idea how to talk about music. This was also originally supposed to be a blog about how much I dislike In Rainbows, but I had nothing to say.
My friend Vijay did a
My friend Vijay did a drawing that more or less sums up how I feel about In Rainbows:
