How Texas can get into the Big 12 title game.

I know a lot of Texas fans are now in the hopeful boat, with a chance to backdoor their way into the Big 12 title game. There are multiple scenarios, however, that can get Texas into the title game, and they don’t necessarily have to beat A&M to do it (though, they probably wouldn’t feel worthy of going if they ended up doing that).

Scenario 1: Texas beats Texas A&M and Oklahoma State beats Oklahoma. Texas wins the Big 12 South outright, and goes to the title game, no controversy needed.

Scenario 2: Oklahoma wins. No questions asked. OU wins the Big 12 South outright and goes to the title game.

Scenario 3: Both Texas and Oklahoma lose. That would create a three-way tie with Texas, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State to determine the South representative, which would generate the tiebreaker.

The official tiebreaker rules can be found at
http://www.big12sports.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-re...

Step 1 is the comparison of the teams against each other, which would be a draw, as all would be 1-1 (Texas beats OSU, OSU beats OU, OU beats Texas)

Step 2 is the comparison of teams against their division. Ironically, all 3 teams would be 3-2 against the South division, with their third losses coming to Colorado (OU), Kansas St (UT), and Kansas (OSU) respectively.

Step 3 would be the record against the fourth, then fifth, then sixth, place teams if necessary. This would create the breakup that causes the difference. The fourth place team is now guaranteed to be Texas Tech, who finished 4-4 in the conference. Texas A&M would tie that number with a win over Texas, but Tech beat A&M 35-7 head-to-head. While Texas and Oklahoma State beat Tech, OU did not, and therefore would be eliminated.

Once the three is cut to two, the tiebreaker says to go to the head-to-head matchup with the two teams remaining. Texas beat Oklahoma State, so therefore Texas will be the South representative.

So, the Texas vs Texas A&M is quite pointless when it comes to representing the Big 12 South. Now, for BCS at-large implications, absolutely. But, for those looking for a Big 12 berth, root for Oklahoma State, and Texas will be guaranteed in with a win by the Cowboys.
