Kansas is coming down to Austin, currently #3 in the nation, only one loss on the road in Manhattan. Texas has survived during their current three game winning streak, and have done pretty well at home, only losing on a last second 3 to Brandon Flowers and Wisconsin. Joe Lunardi of espn.com's bracketology moved Texas up to a 2-seed following the OT road win over Iowa State.
There will be two key matchups, which in essence covers the whole team anyway. First off, the guard battle between the duo of AJ Abrams and DJ Augustin against the three-guard rotation of Mario Chalmers, Russell Robinson, and Sherron Collins. That's a battle that will decide whether Texas has a chance, especially considering those two are carrying the load recently, combining for 40+ points each of the last two games. Robinson and Chalmers are two of the best defensive guards in the game, and if they contain the Texas sub-6' duo, then Texas will get blown out.
If the backcourt can hold their own, it'll be up to the front line to sway the decision to one side or the other. Connor Atchley, Damion James, Gary Johnson, and a little help from the 3 big backups in Dexter Pittman, Clint Chapman, and Alexis Wangmene will be critical in trying to slow down the dynamite bigs of Kansas, more specifically Darrell Arthur, Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun and Cole Aldrich. Justin Mason will probably be on Brandon Rush, so that seems like less of a disadvantage than the bigs would. Both Arthur and Jackson have been very solid offensively, while the Horns have been inconsistent at best. Atchley's shooting ability may be very important in clearing up space, and making Arthur/Jackson/Kaun have to defend out of their comfort zone.
Either way, it'll be a big time game between two solid programs. Interesting see how it turns out.
