Texas sports roundup.

Having not written much the past couple weeks, here's a quick rundown of all the sports at UT recently:

Men's Basketball: Lost to Tech 10 days ago on the road, knocking them out of the top-5 nationally. Texas redeemed themselves with wins at home over Nebraska and Oklahoma State, though both by single digits. Texas is the co-Big 12 champs, and will have the #1 seed in the men's tourney. Rick Barnes was named Big 12 Coach of the Year, DJ Augustin was 1st-team all-Big 12, and both AJ Abrams and Damion James were 2nd-team all-Big 12. Justin Mason was on the Big 12 All-defensive team. They will play the Oklahoma State-Texas Tech winner from Thursday's 1st round matchups on Friday in the Big 12 Quarterfinals.

Women's basketball: Women finished strong, winning the final 3 games, 2 of which were on the road, including against top-15 Oklahoma, giving them a solid foundation for getting into the NCAA tournament and moving up to getting a #7 seed in the Big 12 tournament, where they'll play Wednesday.

Baseball: Texas got off to a quick start, sweeping VCU to start the year, but lost 2 of 3 the following two weekends, one in a three-game group against Tennessee/Rice/Houston in Minute Maid Park, and then against Stanford this past weekend. They did win 2 against UT-Pan American and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in mid-week games. Austin Wood has been dominant as a starter, but pitching's been an issue outside of that. The newcomers are contributing offensively, with transfer Brandon Belt hitting .444, freshman Cameron Rupp hitting .429, and transfer David Hernandez hitting .385. Local freshman Kevin Keyes has also contributed early on, hitting .333 and stealing 2 bases. Travis Tucker has also had a unique year, though only slugging .378, has hit .311, walked 14 times, been hit six times, and stole 10 bases, so reaching base at a .515 clip. Odd year so far, but lots of potential with a team that has more than half newcomers.

Softball

Texas softball is still working on moving on out of Cat Osterman's shadow, getting knocked out in the regionals last year and off to a bit of a tough start by their standards this year, starting 11-8, with a tie. Megan Denny's been her typical solid stuff, starting the year 9-3, but Texas is 2-4 in games where she is not of record, and the backups, Erin Tresselt and celebrated freshman Brittany Barnhill have struggled so far this year. Loryn Johnson has been a big positive for the Horns though, with 6 Hr and 14 RBI in 19 games, also hitting .364. Texas has had some solid wins themselves, beating Oregon State and Stanford during non-conference play. Should still very easily be an NCAA team.

Swimming and Diving

Men's swimming and diving essentially rules the world, completely dominating the Big 12 championships... again... with several records falling. The Horns won their 29th consecutive conference championship, potentially the most dominant program in a conference sense in the world. Now, they look to end Auburn's run of NCAA Championships at the end of the month (Texas is currently #2, Auburn #1 in the rankings). Women's swimming and diving finished 2nd, and had 9
qualify for the NCAA championships.

That's most of it, along with men's indoor track taking their 3rd consecutive Big 12 championship. Good times around.

Oh yeah, spring football's happening, Spring Jamboree and scrimmage March 29.
