The Guardian has a feature about Mark E. Smith and a very entertaining (and hilarious) excerpt from his new book that's coming out next week (in England at least). Judging by this preview, the book should be a riot. For being a crazy acid-fueled drunkard, he's quite the wise sage. Today's rockstars seem boring in comparison. Is Mark E. Smith the last of a dying breed?

Living legend.
Living legend.
mark e smith is so cool. and
mark e smith is so cool. and hes only 50. thats nothing. REM is fifty. sonic youth is 50. but hes mark e smtih! hes mark e smith! hes totally cooler than REM and sonic youth combined, and i will go on record for saying that. ok, thurston moore is pretty cool, but im more partial to MES.
i guess the only other living rock figure that has more clout with me as far blowing my mind is iggy, and he's only 60. still rocks/rolls even if his new stuff is crap. thing is pick your longevity and career structure: MES, always has had a great career even if he didnt ever get to give songs to carnival cruise commericals. it was never horribly horrible. or iggy, sometimes REALLLLLLLLY great career heights, other times laughabley horrible (look up the song "butt town" on youtube). either way being old rules!
last thing about iggy is that for some reason a large collection of his most embarassing material is the stuff i get behind the most, i.e, "soldier." seriously "dog food" and "loco mosquito" are in that weird and rare category of songs that are simultaneously super crappy/supper amazing. a lot of lou reed songs hop into this category as well (see anything from the 80s for this category). nature of kitsch.
