This Wednesday on Blues At Sunrise DJ Smokehouse Brown interviews Harold McMillan. Mcmillan is the founder and director of Diverse Arts Culture Works, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the multicultural arts scene in Austin. In 1990 McMillan founded the Blues Family Tree Project, an oral history project that records the life histories of some of East Austin's esteemed blues legends.
This Friday, August 29, Diverse Arts presents a special program at the Historic Victory Grill on 1104 E. 11th St. First, McMillan will be screening the 30-minute documentary "Austin Texas: East Side Blues." After the screening, McMillan will be joined by Martha Norkunas, professor of oral history at the University of Texas, for an open discussion about the effects of gentrification on East Austin's blues scene. A live performance by the Texas Eastside Kings, featuring Austin blues icons Henry "Bluesboy" Hubbard and Donald "Duck" Jennings, follows the discussion and screening.
Recommended donation at the door of $5 to $10. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the screening begins at 8:00.
Smokehouse will also be giving away tickets to the upcoming Gary Clark, Jr. and Hubert Sumlin/Buddy Flett performances going down this week at Antone's! It all goes down this Wednesday from 7-9 AM.
