RIP Nappy Brown 1929-2008

Legendary R&B pioneer Nappy Brown, born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1929, died a little over a week ago. He achieved fame with a string of hits for the Savoy label back in the 1950s, including the popular "Don't Be Angry." In 1957 Brown penned “Right Time,” later made famous by Ray Charles. His singing style was one of a kind, as his obituary in the New York Times points out: "his vocalizations seemed almost a kind of obscure pig Latin, as he added syllables in strategic spots to goose the rhythm: 'Well-a well-a well-a baby-la.' He once said that he got the idea by listening to foreign-language radio stations."

This Wednesday from 7-9 AM on Blues At Sunrise, DJ Smokehouse Brown pays tribute to the great Nappy Brown. He'll be spinning cuts from his early Savoy recording career, in addition to his final studio album "Long Time Coming," released last year on Blind Pig Records.
