This Thursday, we had three amazing women on the show. We focused on services available to Muslim families experiencing domestic violence.
Andrea Albalawi is the Program Development Director for the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children. She shared information on the new foundation and its work to cultivate healthy families, and serve survivors of abuse, in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. The foundation recently opened the country's first licensed shelter.
Dr. Noel Busch has been working with the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children through her role as head of UT's Institute on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Noel is also an associate professor at the UT School of Social Work and is active in research and social work practice with survivors of relationship violence.
Yasmin Turk founded the Family Matters hotline of Central Texas Muslimaat and is currently a family violence services coordinator at the Texas Council on Family Violence. She spoke strongly to the importance of providing services that value the entire family, hold abusers accountable and help them to change, and address domestic violence as a community, not an individual, issue.
