Today on Pimping the Public Library: My favorite thing ever checked out (so far)
Studio One Soul
This is a compilation of reggae covers of soul songs released by Soul Jazz records. Can we talk about this track listing for a second?! Talk about hit after continuous hit:
1. Express Yourself - Leroy Sibbles
2. Respect - Norma Fraser
3. Groove Me - Leroy Sibbles
4. Time Is Tight - The Heptones
5. Message from a Black Man - The Heptones
6. I'll Be Around - Otis Gayle
7. Still Water - Jerry Jones,
8. Soulful Strut - Sound Dimension
9. Can't Get Enough - Richard Ace
10. Don't Break Your Promise - Chosen Few, Chosen Few
11. Queen of the Minstrels - The Eternals
12. First Cut Is the Deepest - Norma Fraser
13. How Strong - Kenny Parker, Ken Parker
14. Set Me Free - Ken Boothe
15. Is It Because I'm Black - Senior Soul
16. Deeper and Deeper - Jackie Mittoo
17. I Don't Want to Be Right - Alton Ellis
18. No One Can Stop Us - Willie Williams
Soul Jazz records puts out the most amazing compilations. Since they're based in London their releases are hard to come by and expensive. This is further complicated by that fact that the APL's current holdings of soul jazz records (including UT) are pitiful. UT only has one that I know of- Chicano power! Latin rock in the USA 1968-1976. It is more difficult to search by publisher on the APL catalog. When searching "Soul Jazz" the number seven result I was given was Whatever: the '90s pop & culture box- which has quite a track listing on its own.
Long story short: I happened upon this release on Interlibrary Loan by searching for all of Soul Jazz's releases and requesting all of them until someone sent me something. (visit past blogs for a note on interlibrary loan)
What luck! If you're a fan of Delirious Before Dawn (Wednesday night/Thursday morning 1-2), you have heard many a track off this album on my radio show. There is a track for any possible way I am feeling at any given time. Well except maybe track 5 or 15...
