This week on Blues at Sunrise, DJ Smokehouse Brown salutes Larry Monroe, veteran DJ from the station across the plaza and host of the long-running Blue Monday program.
Monroe retired from the broadcast booth on August 30 after nearly 30 years hosting Blue Monday. Monroe started hosting the show in 1981, and concluded his final broadcast with special guest cohost James Cotton. In 2002 he was honored with the “Keeping the Blues Alive” award by the Blues Foundation for his contributions through noncommercial radio. Although Monroe doesn’t have plans to return to radio broadcasting any time soon, he is currently working on a number of other projects, including 3D digital photography and his forthcoming autobiography, which he hopes to have published next year.
