Deep Sea Diver is the side-project of Jessica Dobson, guitarist for the Shins. As such, History Speaks operates in the same West-Coast-indie-pop-rock vein as the Shins, but with a bit of a more feminine, poppier vibe owing to Dobson’s vocals and leading influence in the band. The album starts off strong with “Ships” and “Weekend Wars,” two catchy tunes driven forward by a bass guitars beat, and ends well with the titular track “History Speaks” (which is the longest track at six minutes, fyi). Also noteworthy are the head-bopping “You Go Running” and lower-key “Why Must a Man Change.” If you like the Shins or other West Coast indie stuff, give it a spin.
