Beware of roots attacking at a new time tonight. I start my summer time slot tonight at 8:00 pm and will be cranking out new, classic, and forgotten reggae gems until 10 pm. At which point, the Reverend takes over (at his usual time) for another edition of the Afro Boogaloo Soul Revue!

Last week, the Reverend and I made an agreement to host the other's show if our team became eliminated from the NCAA men's basketball tournament. While both of us are big Longhorn fans, we also have other allegiances: He, being a Kansas grad (currently a UT grad student), was rooting for the Jay Hawks and I, being the son of a UNC grad and life-long Carolina fan, was pulling for the Heels.

The legendary Jamaican producer, Joel Gibson, better known as Joe Gibbs, passed away last Thursday. A gifted producer, Gibbs was also a major player in the business side of late 70s reggae scene as he owned his own studio and record label. The Joe Gibbs Studio featured some of Kingston's best session musicians at the time including drummer Sly Dunbar, bassist Robbie Shakespeare, and guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith.

Tonight's the night. Tonight's the ni-i-ight.

Come one, come all to KVRX's second reggae benefit show. We've got an elite cast of local reggae musicians that will be performing at tonight's show at Ruta Maya (3601 S. Congress, next to the water tower).

Admission is $7 and is open to all ages. We'll start close to 9:00 pm and be partying until they kick us out at 2:00 am.

'When Roots Attack!' will be on from 7-9 AM on Friday (instead of the usual 5-7 AM) to wake you up with some vicious riddims. You can get a preview of what to expect at the "When Roots Attack! KVRX Benefit" as I'll be playing some music from the artists that will be performing live at Ruta Maya later on that evening.

McPullish will be hanging out with me and helping to pick out some tunes. Also, there's a possibility Judge may show up, too.
