Resistencia on Upstream
Tonight on Upstream, we had Rene, a caretaker and volunteer at Resistencia. Reistencia is so much more than a book store. The store has been home to Red Salmon Press since 1983, which publishes community newletters, neighborhood newpapers, and leaflets. Red Salmon Arts is a Native American/Chicano based organization. Resistencia also started SOY, Save Our Youth, which was one of the first literacy programs in Austin to serve youth in correctional facilities. SOY is a unique and empowering program that focuses on pride in cultural heritage.
Yellow Bike Project!!!
Tonight is the first show in the Tara and Emily dynasty!!! We welcome all you free thinkers, activists, and organizers to a semester of expanding your mind and being a “thinking human being!” It’s gonna be a fun ride.
Radio Programming
Check out Upstream Radio on Thursdays from 7 to 8pm to learn about Social Justice issues in Austin, local organizations that are working to improve these problems, and ways that you can get involved in your community. Every week, we are swimming UPSTREAM in a sea of apathy and indifference.
Urban Roots: Youth Community Action for Food Justice
Max Elliot and Mike Evans from Urban Roots, a program of Youthlaunch, came on Upstream to talk about the local food movement, youth empowerment, and activism. Through Urban Roots they are planning to build a youth-run, community supported urban farm in east Austin. To learn more about the program, check out their website at www.youthlaunch.org. Upstream's website is www.myspace.com/upstreamradio.
Seven Straight Nights, National Coming Out Day
Wednesday night marked Austin's first Seven Straight Nights rally, an event created for allies of the LGBT community to show support. A partnership between Soulforce and Atticus Circle, supported by the Campus Alliance for Progress and Equality Now in Austin, were primary contributers for the Austin event.
